Galicia y su Patrimonio quedaron al margen de los problemas planteados en las primeras restauraciones del siglo XIX, sobre todo en lo que he definido como la búsqueda de la identidad prerrománica, debido a las dificultades de catalogación estilística y cronológica del patrimonio altomedieval español. La declaración de los Monumentos Nacionales en Galicia se inició tardíamente en 1895, sufriendo con ello un abandono oficial, cuya conservación y restauración no se abordó en la práctica hasta el siglo XX. En el caso de los monumentos más antiguos, a los que se dedica este trabajo, las actuaciones restauradoras se desarrollan en tres periodos perfectamente diferenciados, antes de la Guerra Civil, durante la posguerra y en el periodo autonómico, cada fase y cada intervención orientada por criterios dispares y con resultados diversos, no siempre homologables.

Above all, that happened in the cases which I have defined as the seeking of the Pre-Romanesque identity, due to the difficulties associated with the stylistic and chronological cataloguing of the early Medieval Spanishheritage. The declaration of the National Monuments in Galicia beganlate in 1895. That fact caused an official state of neglect, and their conservation and restoration were not tackled until the 20th century.The present study is focused on the oldest monuments, in which case the restoration works were developed in three clear, different periods: before the Civil War, during the post-war era and in the autonomous term. Each stage and intervention followed different criteria and the results were also dissimilar and we can not always standardized them.
